Cleaning Your Garbage Disposal

Cleaning your garbage disposal is important for several reasons. Regular maintenance, like using baking soda + vinegar every few months, can go a long way in keeping your garbage disposal in good shape!

Odor Control

Food scraps can build up and decompose, leading to unpleasant smells in your kitchen.

Prevents Clogs

Regular cleaning helps prevent blockages and ensures your disposal operates smoothly.

Hygiene

A clean disposal reduces bacteria growth, promoting a healthier kitchen environment.

Efficiency

A well-maintained disposal functions better, helping to prevent jams and extending its lifespan.

Cost Savings

Keeping your disposal clean can reduce the need for repairs or replacements, saving you money in the long run.

See a step-by-step video tutorial on how to do it, below!

Step 1: Turn off the power to the disposal

Making sure the disposal is powered off is a crucial safety measure.

Step 2: Ensure there is no debris in the disposal

Clearing out any larger debris from the disposal guarantees optimal cleaning results.

Step 3: Clean the splash guard

Use some soap and an old toothbrush to scrub thoroughly. Odors often get trapped in the flap.

Step 4: Deodorize with baking soda and vinegar

Measure out 1/2 cup of baking soda and add it to the disposal. Then, pour in 1/2 cup of distilled white vinegar.

Step 5: Wait 15 minutes

This allows the baking soda and vinegar to go to work!

Step 6: Flush with hot water

Flush the disposal with hot water for 30 seconds and then turn the power back on.

Pro Tip #1: Deep Clean

Place a handful of ice cubes and kosher salt into the disposal, then run it for 10 seconds.

Pro Tip #2: Fresh Scent

Place a lemon slice in the disposal and run it for 10 seconds to enhance fresh scents.
